Supporting future generations

The “Plus 2″ Scholarship Program

In Nepal, public schools only have classes till the tenth grade.  After the completion of 10th grade, all students have to pass the “School Leaving Certificate” (SLC) exam in order to graduate.  For those who want to, or rather can afford further education, they can pursue 11th and 12th grade in private schools. For children in the villages, particularly in remote mountainous regions, it either students must find funding to pay for a private school in the city or means education stops at the 10th grade. The Greater Himalayas Plus Two Program will fund one student each year from a remote Himalayan community who is interested in pursuing the 11th and 12th grade in any field of studies. Priorities will be given to students with financial needs and from rural mountainous regions.

Plus 2 Scholarship Recipient for 2008

Nima Gyalzen, the first Greater Himalayas Foundation "Plus Two" Scholarship Recipient

The first student to benefit from this scholarships program is Nima Gyalzen from Khumjung village, Nepal. His father is a trekking guide, very much a seasonal job and mother is a house wife.  Nima scored very high on his SLC examination from Khumjung High School in 2008.  He is one of the top ten students in his batch.

The Greater Himalayan Foundation scholarship provides Rs. 6,000 per month  which is approximately US$ 80.  This is sufficient to include his tuition, accomodation and a small living stipend.  Nima lives in a rented room shared with his friends in Kathmandu and the students cook their own meal. We hope he will be a successful student and proves to be a role model for future GHF scholarship students.

Mingma Norbu Sherpa Memorial Scholarships at Lincoln University, New Zealand

Mingma Norbu Sherpa Memorial Scholarships have been set up at Lincoln University, New Zealand for students from the Himalayas who want to pursue a Masters Degree in Forestry, Environment and Natural Resource Management. This scholarship will be available to 2 students every two years.

The scholarship was established to continue the deep connection between New Zealand and Nepal, especially in the Sagarmatha region, stemming from New Zealand and Sir Edmund Hillarys relationship with the Sherpa people. Mingma himself was educated at the first of Sir Eds schools and later went to New Zealand where he graduated with a Parks and Recreation Diploma from Lincoln College. Mingma was well known in New Zealand conservation and mountain circles and enjoyed a special friendship with Sir Ed.

The Mingma Norbu Sherpa Memorial Fund is seeking donations to reach its $350,000 target.  It will be held by WWF-New Zealand as an endowment fund which will yield sufficient funds to support a student annually in perpetuity.  The fund will be administered by a small steering group including Dave Bamford, Director of Tourism Resource Consultants, Bruce Jefferies of IUCN/World Commission Protected Areas (WCPA), David Simmonds, Professor of Tourism at Lincoln University, Lisa Choegyal (Nepal) and Chris Howe, Executive Director of WWF-New Zealand, along with chair of the fund, Jo Breese.

This scholarship is intended to support young individuals from the Himalayan mountain regions  who are committed to the future of environmental protection and sustainable natural resource management in their respective country.  The fund has been set up to give young conservation leaders the opportunity to follow in Mingma’s footsteps and continue his life’s work.
